The California Highway Patrol stated that Ellis was driving a westbound Audi A4 on Arrow Highway when he veered into the eastbound lanes, colliding with a Mazda 3 and a Hyundai Accent. Tragically, Ellis was unable to escape the Audi before it burst into flames, resulting in his death.

The driver of the Mazda, a 32-year-old El Monte woman, suffered from complaints of pain. However, the 17-year-old girl who was a passenger in her car remained unharmed. The operator of the Hyundai, a 39-year-old Pomona woman, sustained major injuries and was rushed to Pomona Valley Hospital Medical Center for treatment.
