A devastating blast followed by a raging fire in a chemical manufacturing factory in Surat has resulted in the tragic deaths of seven workers. The bodies of the victims were recovered from the factory premises during the early hours of Thursday, November 30, as confirmed by officials.

Surat district collector Ayush Oak stated that out of the seven deceased individuals found at the chemical manufacturing unit of Aether Industries Ltd in Sachin industrial area, one was an employee of the company while the remaining six were contractual workers. “During a thorough search operation within the factory premises, officials discovered the bodies of the seven workers who had gone missing after the fire engulfed the plant on Wednesday,” he explained.

The names of the victims have been identified as Divyesh Patel (company employee), Santosh Vishwakarma, Sanat Kumar Mishra, Dharmendra Kumar, Ganesh Prasad, Sunil Kumar, and Abhishek Singh.

In addition to the fatalities, around two dozen people sustained injuries in the incident and are currently receiving treatment at various hospitals, according to the collector.

The fire broke out in the chemical plant at approximately 2 am on Wednesday, triggered by an explosion in a large storage tank following a leakage of inflammable chemicals. Firefighters battled the blaze for nine hours, deploying 15 fire tenders to bring the situation under control.

The company, Aether Industries Ltd, released a statement on November 29, informing stock exchanges about the incident. “We hereby inform that an incident of fire was reported at the manufacturing site of the company at Plot No. 8203, GIDC Sachin, Surat, today in the early morning around 01:50 Hrs,” the statement read. It also mentioned that approximately 25 individuals had sustained injuries.

The tragic incident has raised concerns about safety measures in chemical factories and the importance of implementing strict regulations to prevent such accidents in the future. Investigations are currently underway to determine the cause of the blast and fire.
