Gurpatwant Singh Pannun Nikhil Gupta Hardeep Singh Nijjar : “New York Lawyer Allegedly Targeted in Indian Murder Plot; Promised Inquiry Raises Doubts”

Death – Obituary – Accident and Crime News : New York authorities have recently alleged that they foiled a murder plot against Gurpatwant Singh Pannun, an Indian national residing in the United States. Pannun, the founder of New York’s Sikhs for Justice group, is an advocate for the formation of Khalistan, an independent Sikh homeland within India. The Indian government views this movement as a security threat.

According to court documents, the assassination plot was directed from India by a government agent, and the intended hit man was an undercover law enforcement officer. Nikhil Gupta, an Indian national allegedly following the government agent’s instructions, has been charged with “murder-for-hire.”

The court documents also reveal that Pannun was not the only target of the assassination plot in North America. Gupta reportedly told an associate, who was also an undercover source, that there were “so many targets” and that there would be multiple jobs each month for the hired hit man. The documents further suggest that four jobs, including targeting Pannun and three others in Canada, were supposed to be completed before the end of June.

In response to these allegations, Pannun expressed his lack of surprise, stating that Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi has a track record of using violence to suppress criticism and dissenting political opinion. He also emphasized that he is not afraid, stating, “If death is the destiny, or death is the cost that I have to pay to run this Khalistan referendum movement, which is inherently a democratic process, I’m ready to face death.”

India has promised to conduct a “high-level enquiry committee” to investigate the matter. However, Pannun and others remain skeptical of the Indian government’s intentions, viewing it as an accused killer investigating himself. In contrast to Canada’s claims linking Indian government agents to the killing of a Sikh leader, which resulted in diplomatic tensions between the two countries, the United States has not faced any repercussions from India thus far.

Experts believe that the strong strategic partnership between the US and India, particularly in countering China’s influence in the Indo-Pacific region, would prevent this case from escalating into a bilateral crisis. The White House has reiterated its commitment to strengthening its partnership with India while taking the case seriously.
