Madeleine McCann : “Man Investigated for Madeleine McCann’s Disappearance to Stand Trial on Sexual Assault Charges”

Death – Obituary – Accident and Crime News : A man who is currently under investigation for the disappearance of British toddler Madeleine McCann will stand trial in Germany on five separate sexual assault charges. Christian Brueckner, a convicted child abuser, is already behind bars in Germany for raping a woman in the same area of the Algarve region of Portugal where Madeleine went missing in 2007. Brueckner was formally identified as an official suspect in the McCann case in April 2022.

The suspect, whose name has not been released due to German privacy rules, is facing three counts of aggravated rape and two counts of sexual abuse of children in Portugal between December 12, 2000, and June 11, 2017. The trial will begin on February 16 in the German city of Braunschweig.

Brueckner first came to the attention of authorities in 2017 and was named as a formal suspect in Madeleine’s disappearance in April 2022. It was reported that he had been using a yellow and white VW T3 Westfalia campervan in and around Praia da Luz, near the resort where the McCanns were on holiday at the time Madeleine vanished.

German prosecutors have revealed that telecomms data shows Brueckner received a phone call on May 3, 2007, near the McCanns’ apartment, despite his denial of being in the area at the time. In May 2023, a major search was conducted of a Portuguese reservoir that Brueckner had allegedly described as his “little paradise.”

The German prosecutor, Hans Christian Wolters, stated that several items were seized as part of the investigation and will be evaluated in the coming days and weeks. However, it is unclear if these items have any connection to the Madeleine McCann case. The investigations against the 45-year-old suspect in Braunschweig are expected to continue for a long time.

Police in Germany claim to have “concrete evidence” that Madeleine is dead, although this has not been proven. This latest development comes after Portuguese police traveled to London earlier this year to apologize to the McCann family for their handling of the investigation.

In September 2007, four months after Madeleine’s disappearance, Kate and Gerry McCann were named as suspects and were questioned by detectives who believed they had strangled and concealed Madeleine’s body. Mrs. McCann later revealed that she was offered a deal to admit to covering up her daughter’s death in exchange for a shorter sentence.
