Michael Ray Schlicht : Teenager’s 1974 Death Linked to California Serial Killer

Death – Obituary – Accident and Crime News : Teenager Michael Ray Schlicht, who was found dead in 1974, has been identified as one of the earliest victims of infamous serial killer Randy Kraft. Schlicht’s identity remained unknown for 49 years until this week when the Orange County Sheriff’s Department announced that he was from Cedar Rapids, Iowa. Kraft, known as the “Scorecard Killer,” was convicted of killing 16 men in Orange County during a decade-long spree that ended in 1983.

The body of the unidentified teenager, now known to be Schlicht, was found in September 1974 by two people off-roading in a fire road northeast of Laguna Beach. Initially, his death was ruled as accidental due to alcohol and diazepam intoxication. However, subsequent similar deaths in the area were classified as homicides, and investigators suspected that Schlicht had also been a victim of foul play.

Randy Kraft, now 78 years old, is currently incarcerated at San Quentin State Prison. In addition to the Orange County killings, he is also suspected of committing murders in California, Oregon, and Michigan. Kraft’s killing spree came to an end in 1983 when he was pulled over by a California Highway Patrol trooper and found with a strangled Marine in his vehicle.

The breakthrough in identifying Schlicht came in November 2022 when tissue samples from the John Doe case were submitted
