Death – Obituary – Accident and Crime News : Ogun State Commissioner of Police, Abiodun Alamutu, has revealed that the perpetrators behind the murder of Mr. Taiwo Oyekanmi, the Director of Finance in Governor Dapo Abiodun’s office, are individuals within the organization. The incident occurred on Wednesday when Oyekanmi was returning from the bank after withdrawing funds for the state in a bullion van. The police commissioner described the robbery and murder as premeditated, expressing surprise at how the armed robbers were equipped with a sledgehammer to break into the van. He speculated that the gunmen must have received insider information about Oyekanmi’s bank visit and the large amount of money he was transporting.
The assailants, wearing hoods to conceal their identities, arrived in a Toyota Corolla with an unknown registration number. The police are currently working tirelessly to identify and apprehend the suspects. Meanwhile, investigations have revealed that Oyekanmi had visited a branch of Fidelity Bank and Sterling Bank in Oke-Ilewo, Abeokuta, to withdraw a total of N112.335 million. The bullion van carrying the cash was intercepted on the Kuto flyover, where the robbers used a sledgehammer from their vehicle to break into the van. Tragically, Oyekanmi was the only one identified and shot dead among the three occupants, which also included the driver, Lekan Akintoye, and another man named Peter Samson.
It has been confirmed that the bullion van was not accompanied by a police escort at the time of the incident. Inspector Rasheed Adegbite, the assigned mobile police officer, had traveled to Oyo State without permission and has since been arrested for investigation. The circumstances surrounding the killing of the finance director have sparked a wave of reactions. Femi Aina, a legal practitioner and senatorial candidate, criticized the state government for failing to provide a police escort for such a substantial amount of money. He urged the family of the deceased to consult a lawyer, as employers have a responsibility to ensure the safety of their employees.
Olaposi Oginni, the National Secretary of the New Nigeria People’s Party, expressed concern over the security situation in Ogun State and called for a change in the leadership of the state’s security agencies. He described the attack on the bullion van, which occurred just a few meters from the Governor’s office, as unacceptable. As of now, there have been no further updates from the state police command regarding the investigation into the incident.
