In a devastating incident, a major fire engulfed a chemical manufacturing facility in Surat city, Gujarat, claiming the lives of seven workers. The bodies of the missing individuals were discovered in the early hours of Thursday, as rescue operations continued at the site.

According to Surat Collector Ayush Oak, out of the seven victims, one was an employee of Aether Industries Ltd, the company operating the chemical manufacturing unit, while the other six were contract workers. The deceased have been identified as Divyesh Patel (company employee), Santosh Vishwakarma, Sanat Kumar Mishra, Dharmendra Kumar, Ganesh Prasad, Sunil Kumar, and Abhishek Singh.

The fire broke out at around 2 a.m. on Wednesday, following an explosion in a large tank caused by a leakage of inflammable chemicals stored inside. The intense blaze posed a significant challenge for firefighters, with 15 fire tenders working tirelessly for nine hours to bring it under control. Sadly, the efforts arrived too late for the seven victims.

In addition to the fatalities, 24 people sustained injuries during the incident and are currently receiving treatment at various hospitals. The exact cause of the fire is yet to be determined, and investigations are underway to ascertain the circumstances leading to the tragic incident.

Aether Industries Ltd, in a statement submitted to stock exchanges, confirmed the incident and expressed their sorrow. The company reported, “We hereby inform that an incident of fire was reported at the manufacturing site of the company at Plot No. 8203, GIDC Sachin, Surat, today early morning around 01:50 Hrs.” They also mentioned that approximately 25 people had suffered injuries.

The Surat administration has initiated an inquiry into the incident to determine any lapses in safety measures and potential violations of regulations. The chemical plant fire serves as a stark reminder of the importance of strict adherence to safety protocols in industrial facilities to prevent such tragic accidents.

The local authorities have extended condolences to the families of the deceased and assured them of all necessary support during this difficult time.
