38-year-old Antoine Beech : Indianapolis Police Release Edited Footage of Officer Shooting Suspect in Parked Car

Death – Obituary – Accident and Crime News : INDIANAPOLIS — The Indianapolis Metropolitan Police Department (IMPD) has released edited footage from an October incident in which an officer shot a suspect sitting inside a parked car. The incident occurred on October 19 at a Speedway gas station on Shelby Street. The footage, compiled from security and body-worn cameras, shows the moment Officer Ryan Thomas fired his department-issued firearm at the suspect, Antoine Beech, through the car windshield.

According to IMPD, officers had just finished an unrelated robbery investigation when a person approached them, informing them that a wanted man was inside a car parked at a filling pump. Beech was found sitting in a white Chevrolet Impala with an active warrant for his arrest. In the edited footage, three officers can be seen approaching Beech’s car from different angles, with Officer Thomas firing his weapon.

The video reveals that two of the three officers involved in the incident did not have their body-worn cameras activated when the shot was fired. However, the footage from the one officer whose camera was activated shows him gathering information on Beech and then approaching the parked vehicle from behind. The footage includes audio of officers repeatedly instructing Beech to raise his hands and not to make any sudden movements.

After the shot was fired, officers can be seen assisting Beech out of the car. He was later found to have been shot in his right hand and had a laceration to his chest, but no bullet fragment or foreign object was found in his chest. Beech was subsequently arrested on multiple warrants and an additional charge of unlawful firearm possession by a serious violent felon.

The IMPD Critical Incident Response Team is conducting a criminal investigation, and Officer Thomas has been placed on administrative leave. The Use of Force Review Board will also conduct a mandatory hearing once the criminal process concludes. The Marion County Prosecutor’s Office is assisting in the investigation.

Following the release of the video, Antoine Beech’s attorney released a statement expressing doubts about the reasonableness of Officer Thomas’ actions and promising to vigorously defend Beech’s rights.

This incident marks at least the eighth officer-involved shooting in Indianapolis between August and October 2023. IMPD has investigated a total of 17 officer-involved shootings this year.
