Death – Obituary – Accident and Crime News : The human remains found in Nevada 26 years ago have finally been identified as Lorena Gayle Mosley, a 41-year-old woman. The Washoe County Regional Medical Examiner’s Office made the announcement on November 24, 2023, after new technology allowed for the discovery of the first lead in the cold case.
In June 1997, a group of rock climbers discovered Mosley’s body in Washoe County. At that time, an autopsy was conducted, but due to the severe decomposition of her body, not much could be concluded. However, the case was still ruled a homicide based on the circumstances surrounding her death.
Dr. Laura D. Knight, the Chief Medical Examiner and Coroner, revealed during a recent press conference that this new lead was made possible through the use of innovative technology and the generosity of donors. She expressed her gratitude for being able to give Ms. Mosley the dignity of being laid to rest with her name.
For 26 years, authorities were unable to determine the identity of the remains until now. Through a partnership between the Medical Examiner’s Office and Othram Inc., Mosley’s DNA profile was compared to a database, resulting in her identification.
Due to the advanced state of decomposition, the exact cause of Mosley’s death could not be determined. However, authorities have reopened the 1997 cold case and are now working to gather further evidence and details.
A fundraiser has been launched on DNASolved.com to cover the costs of tests and further investigation. In addition to the remains, other items were recovered in 1997, including clothing and jewelry worn by Mosley.
Authorities have urged the public to come forward with any information regarding the case. The Washoe County Sheriff’s Office is determined to continue the investigation now that they have the first lead in over two decades.
Lorena Gayle Mosley’s family has claimed her body, bringing some closure to a case that has remained unsolved for so many years. As the investigation progresses, authorities hope that more information will come to light, leading to justice for Mosley and her loved ones.
