Michael Ray Schlicht : “Iowa Teen Identified as Victim of California Serial Killer After 49 Years”

Death – Obituary – Accident and Crime News : Iowa Teenager Identified as Victim of Notorious Serial Killer in California

An Iowa teenager, who had been known only as “John Doe” for almost 50 years, has been identified as one of the early victims of the infamous “Scorecard Killer” in California. The Orange County Sheriff’s Department announced on Tuesday that the teenager has been identified as Michael Ray Schlicht from Cedar Rapids, Iowa.

Randy Kraft, also known as the “Scorecard Killer,” was convicted in 1989 for the abuse and murder of 16 men in Orange County. Kraft, who is currently serving his sentence at San Quentin State Prison, is believed to have killed other individuals in California, Oregon, and Michigan.

Schlicht’s body was discovered on September 14, 1974, by two people off-roading in a remote area northeast of Laguna Beach, California. Initially, his death was considered accidental due to alcohol and diazepam poisoning. However, subsequent similar deaths in the area raised suspicions among investigators, who reclassified them as homicides.

Kraft’s reign of terror came to an end in 1983 when he was pulled over by a California Highway Patrol trooper. In his vehicle, a strangled U.S. Marine was found in the passenger seat. Authorities also discovered several empty beer bottles and an encrypted list of what is believed to be over 67 of Kraft’s victims in the trunk.

Described as a fetishist, Kraft, a former computer programmer, kept dismembered body parts of some of his victims in his freezer. Despite overwhelming evidence, he maintained his innocence during his sentencing.

The breakthrough in identifying Schlicht came in November 2022 when tissue samples were submitted to a private forensic biotechnology company for DNA profiling. The DNA profile was then uploaded into a genealogy database, which ultimately led investigators to a woman in Kansas City, Missouri, believed to be Schlicht’s mother. Her DNA sample confirmed the identity of the victim.

Family members have been notified of the identification, and plans are underway to install a headstone to mark Schlicht’s final resting place. The Orange County Sheriff’s Department is currently investigating the Schlicht murder case and is urging anyone with information to contact them or Orange County Crime Stoppers.

This latest development brings closure to a long-standing mystery and renews hope that justice will be served for all the victims of the “Scorecard Killer.”
