Death – Obituary – Accident and Crime News : Crystal Lake Man Charged with Robbery and Battery After Injuring a Woman: Off-Duty Officer Heroically Apprehends Suspect

A Crystal Lake resident, Maximus Herman, has been arrested and charged with robbery and misdemeanor battery after allegedly robbing a woman and leaving her injured. The incident took place at a grocery store in DuPage County, where an off-duty officer bravely pursued and apprehended the suspect.

Herman, a 21-year-old resident of Crystal Lake, now faces one count of robbery, a Class 2 felony, along with a charge of misdemeanor battery. The Downers Grove Police Department swiftly responded to a report of robbery at the Shop & Save Market on Monday around 5:33 p.m.

According to the DuPage County State’s Attorney’s Office, Herman approached the victim, who was shopping with her purse in her cart. Seizing the opportunity, Herman snatched the woman’s purse from the cart and quickly fled the store. Determined not to let him escape, the victim pursued Herman.

However, Herman found himself unable to enter a getaway vehicle waiting in the parking lot, leading to a struggle between him and the victim. During the altercation, the victim fell and suffered a bruised elbow. Despite her brave efforts, Herman managed to wrestle the purse away from her and made a run for it. Fortunately, an off-duty Illinois State Police trooper witnessed the incident and immediately sprang into action.

The trooper courageously chased after Herman and successfully tackled him in the parking lot, allowing Downers Grove police officers to swiftly apprehend him upon their arrival at the scene.

DuPage County State’s Attorney Robert Berlin expressed outrage at the audacity of the crime, stating, “It is alleged that Mr. Herman robbed an innocent woman of her purse while she was shopping at a local market. The type of brazen behavior allegedly exhibited by Mr. Herman will not be tolerated in DuPage County.”

Berlin also seized the opportunity to remind the public to remain vigilant during the busy holiday shopping season, urging individuals to be aware of their surroundings at all times. He commended the state trooper for his rapid response to a defenseless woman in distress and for his unwavering commitment to public safety.

Herman made his initial appearance in court on Tuesday morning, where DuPage County Judge Joshua Dieden granted prosecutors’ petition to deny pre-trial release. The suspect is scheduled to appear in court again on December 18th.

The heroic actions of the off-duty officer serve as a reminder of the selflessness and bravery displayed by law enforcement professionals, even when off duty. Downers Grove Chief of Police Michael DeVries praised the state trooper for jeopardizing his own safety to apprehend the offender.

As this case unfolds, it underscores the importance of community members remaining vigilant and engaged in ensuring the safety of themselves and others. The cooperation between law enforcement agencies and the public plays a vital role in maintaining peace and security within our communities.
