Hanika : “LPD Charges Hanika with Felony Theft and Possession of Firearms in Latest Crime Tracking Updates”

Death – Obituary – Accident and Crime News : Lincoln Police Department Charges Individual with Felony Theft and Possession of Firearms

The Lincoln Police Department (LPD) has recently filed charges against 25-year-old Hanika, including felony theft and possession of firearms by a prohibited person. This development comes after an incident that unfolded at the Microtel Inn and Suites parking lot at North 25th and Fairfield streets.

The LPD had received information alerting them to be on the lookout for Hanika, who was known to be driving an orange Jeep Wrangler. Hanika had a federal warrant for a probation violation related to weapon possession and was also suspected of involvement in a theft case concerning multiple firearms and ammunition.

According to Chief Michon Morrow of the LPD, the situation escalated when an officer spotted the orange Jeep around 12:20 p.m. and called for backup. Photos from the scene show a marked LPD cruiser parked behind Hanika’s vehicle, with an officer approaching the driver’s side window. However, Hanika reportedly reversed and rammed the cruiser twice before attempting to hit an officer with his vehicle.

In response to the imminent threat, Officer Nicholas Vest, a seven-year veteran in law enforcement, discharged his weapon at Hanika’s vehicle, striking him. A subsequent photo depicts the Jeep next to a building, illustrating the aftermath of the shooting.

Unfortunately, the incident took a disturbing turn when Hanika’s 39-year-old female passenger was seriously injured. As she exited the Jeep, Hanika allegedly ran over her, causing severe, life-altering injuries. Chief Morrow stated that nearby business employees assisted the police in rescuing the woman from underneath the vehicle.

Hanika, who sustained minor injuries, was taken to a hospital before being booked into jail. He has previously faced charges of first-degree assault, attempted first-degree assault on an officer, use of a deadly weapon, and resisting arrest with a deadly weapon.

As the investigation unfolds, the LPD’s actions, particularly Officer Vest’s use of force, will likely undergo scrutiny. The charges against Hanika highlight the ongoing efforts of law enforcement to combat crime and ensure public safety in the Lincoln community.
