Death – Obituary – Accident and Crime News : In a tragic incident that shook the state of Nevada, two Highway Patrol troopers lost their lives in a hit-and-run incident on Interstate 15. The accused driver, Jemarcus Williams, appeared in Las Vegas Justice Court, where his bail was set at $500,000.
The court session took place following the collision that occurred early Thursday morning. Sergeant Michael Abbate and Trooper Alberto Felix were checking on a seemingly sleeping driver when Williams’ vehicle, a white Chevrolet HHR, collided with them and fled the scene. One trooper died at the crash site, while the other passed away at UMC Trauma Hospital.
During the court hearing, Clark County prosecutor Shanon Clowers requested a $1 million bail, citing video evidence that showed Williams drinking at the Palms Casino Resort before the incident. Surveillance footage captured Williams and another individual entering the casino and ordering alcoholic beverages at the Ghost Bar. Police documents indicated that Williams appeared intoxicated, spilling drinks and using furniture for balance. Hotel security escorted him out just moments before the fatal hit-and-run occurred.
Williams now faces charges of reckless driving resulting in death, driving under the influence resulting in death, and duty to stop at the scene of an accident involving death. He was booked into the Clark County Detention Center on Thursday morning.
The Nevada Highway Patrol troopers, Sergeant Michael Abbate and Trooper Alberto Felix, were highly respected members of the force. Abbate, who had recently been promoted to sergeant, had been with the agency since December 2013. Trooper Felix, a US Air Force veteran, joined the force in 2019. A poignant video released by the police department depicted the solemn procession of the troopers’ bodies being escorted by a motorcade of officers to the coroner’s office.
The tragic incident has had a profound impact on Nevada’s law enforcement community and the entire state. Governor Joe Lombardo expressed his condolences and recognized the troopers’ bravery, courage, and sacrifice. The aftermath of the crash resulted in the closure of sections of Nevada’s busiest highway and numerous on-ramps, highlighting the gravity of the incident’s impact on the community.
As the case against Jemarcus Williams unfolds, the state mourns the loss of two dedicated and honorable troopers, reminding us of the dangers faced by law enforcement officers every day in their commitment to protect and serve.
