PARIS: French authorities have arrested a man known for radical Islamism and mental health issues in connection with a suspected terrorist attack in central Paris. The incident occurred late Saturday night near the Eiffel Tower, during a busy weekend, raising tensions as the conflict between Israel and Hamas continues.

The attacker, identified as Armand Rajabpour-Miyandoab, a French national with Iranian heritage, was apprehended after a knife and hammer attack that resulted in the death of a 23-year-old German-Filipino tourist. Two other individuals, a 66-year-old British citizen and a 60-year-old French national, were wounded in the attack. Prosecutors are investigating the incident as a potential terrorist plot.

Rajabpour-Miyandoab, who has a history of mental illness and is known to authorities, shouted “Allahu Akbar” (Arabic for “God is greatest”) during the attack, according to Interior Minister Gerald Darmanin. The suspect expressed anger over the killing of Muslims in Afghanistan and Palestine, accusing France of complicity in the actions of Israel in the Gaza Strip.

French President Emmanuel Macron expressed condolences to the family of the victim and referred to the incident as a “terrorist attack.” Prime Minister Elisabeth Borne emphasized that France will not succumb to terrorism.

The attacker had posted a video on social media claiming responsibility for the attack, discussing current events, the government, and the killing of innocent Muslims. Investigators will closely examine his medical history, as he is described by security sources as “very unstable and easily influenced.”

This is not the first time Rajabpour-Miyandoab has been involved in such activities. In 2016, he was sentenced to four years in prison for planning another attack in Paris, which he did not carry out. During the recent attack, a courageous taxi driver intervened, saving the wife of the slain tourist. The attacker then proceeded to cross the bridge, attacking others and injuring one person with a hammer. The pursuing police used a taser to subdue and apprehend the suspect.

France has experienced several Islamist extremist attacks, including the 2015 attacks in Paris claimed by the Islamic State group, which resulted in the death of 130 people. Although the frequency of such attacks had decreased in recent years, officials have continuously warned about the ongoing threat. Tensions have escalated in France following the recent conflict between Israel and Hamas, particularly due to the country’s significant Jewish and Muslim populations. With the upcoming 2024 Summer Olympic Games in Paris, security in the city has been a major concern.

In October, a teacher named Dominique Bernard was killed in the town of Arras by a radicalized Islamist from Russia’s Caucasus region.
