Death – Obituary – Accident and Crime News : Miami-Dade County, Fla. – A dramatic incident unfolded on Friday night when a Miami-Dade police officer opened fire at a suspect, resulting in seven gunshots being heard, as captured by surveillance cameras. The officer, who belonged to the robbery intervention unit, was in pursuit of a white Dodge Challenger when the events transpired. The chase concluded when the Dodge crashed into a power pole near Northwest 63rd Street and 21st Avenue.
As the officer approached the wrecked vehicle, the driver inside allegedly accelerated, pinning the officer against his unmarked car and prompting him to discharge his firearm. Miami-Dade Police Detective Luis Sierra provided insight into the incident, stating, “The subject accelerated towards one of our officers, striking him and pinning him against his own vehicle. Our officer discharged his firearm, striking the subject.”
Within a minute, additional law enforcement personnel arrived at the scene to assist the officer. Cell phone footage captured the sight of officers gathering around the suspect, later identified as 38-year-old Virgil Bernard French. Meanwhile, cameras continued to roll at Jackson Memorial Hospital as paramedics urgently transported French to Ryder Trauma Center. Although French’s condition was reported as critical, he is currently in stable condition.
The injured officer was also promptly taken to the hospital; however, he has since been released. Authorities identified the Dodge’s passenger as 40-year-old Charlie Harris, who was subsequently arrested on an outstanding warrant for child abuse.
