Death – Obituary – Accident and Crime News : Tragic Crash on Indiana Toll Road Claims Life of 18-year-old Middlebury Resident
BREMEN — In a devastating incident on Sunday, a fatal crash occurred on the Indiana Toll Road, resulting in the loss of life of Mauro Cesar Amaya Reyes, an 18-year-old resident of Middlebury. The Elkhart County Sheriff’s Office received a distress call at approximately 5:58 a.m. reporting a vehicle that had crashed into a wooded area near the C.R. 10 overpass for the Toll Road. Indiana State Police troopers were dispatched to the scene upon their arrival.
According to preliminary investigations conducted by Trooper Matt Henson, it was revealed that the driver of a dark blue 2021 Dodge Ram was traveling westbound on the Toll Road when it veered off the north side of the roadway. The vehicle crashed through the guardrail near mile marker 87.7 before rolling and coming to a rest in a nearby wooded area. Tragically, the driver was ejected during the crash and was pronounced dead at the scene.
Authorities suspect that excessive speed and alcohol played significant roles in the accident. Additionally, it appears that the driver was not wearing a seatbelt at the time of the crash. The investigation into the incident is ongoing.
The right lane of the Toll Road was temporarily closed to facilitate the crash investigation. However, it was reopened at approximately 9 a.m., allowing the flow of traffic to resume as normal. Cleveland Township Fire and EMS, the Elkhart County Coroners Office, Toms 24 Hour Towing, and ITRCC Maintenance all provided invaluable assistance during the incident.
