Death – Obituary – Accident and Crime News : Associated Press

NEW YORK — A horrifying incident unfolded in Far Rockaway, a seaside section of Queens, early Sunday morning, when a man went on a rampage, brutally killing four of his relatives, including two innocent children. The assailant then proceeded to set the house on fire and attacked two police officers with a knife, resulting in one of them fatally shooting him.

The tragic events began at approximately 5:10 a.m. when a distressing call was placed to 911 by a young female relative, reporting that her cousin was ruthlessly attacking their family. The New York Police Department’s Chief of Department, Jeffrey Maddrey, revealed during a morning news briefing that upon arriving at the scene, the officers encountered a man attempting to flee with luggage. In a matter of seconds, the suspect brandished a knife and launched a vicious assault on the officers.

During the confrontation, one officer sustained stab wounds to his neck and chest, while the other officer was slashed in the head. In response, they were forced to discharge their weapons, ultimately neutralizing the attacker. Tragically, an 11-year-old girl was discovered outside the residence and rushed to the hospital, but succumbed to her stab wounds.

Due to a raging fire that engulfed the living room and foyer, authorities initially faced difficulties accessing the home. However, once inside, they uncovered three additional victims who had been brutally stabbed to death: a 12-year-old boy, a 44-year-old woman, and a man in his 30s. Another woman, aged 61, was found gravely injured, suffering from multiple stab wounds, and is currently in critical condition.

Fortunately, both injured police officers are expected to recover from their wounds. Attempts to reach out to the family’s neighbors for further information were unsuccessful at the time of reporting. The suspect, identified as 38-year-old Courtney Gordon, had been visiting the family from his residence in the Bronx. The identities of the victims have not been disclosed at this time.

Patrick Hendry, the head of the New York Police Department’s police union, expressed his astonishment at the officer’s bravery, stating, “This scene was chaos. Multiple victims, a house on fire, and a madman on a rampage, on a mission. The skill that this police officer had shooting and stopping the threat after he was being stabbed. Unbelievable skill.”

Sadly, this incident follows another knife rampage that occurred just a week prior in the Bronx, claiming the lives of three individuals. The perpetrator, a college student who claimed to be hearing voices, brutally murdered his father, his 5-year-old half-brother, and the child’s mother.

As the investigation into this shocking act of violence continues, the community grapples with grief and the need for answers.
