In a horrifying incident that unfolded early Sunday morning in the Far Rockaway neighborhood of Queens, New York City, at least four people were fatally stabbed, including two children aged 11 and 12. The suspect, identified as 38-year-old Courtney Gordon, went on a rampage, setting fire to the couch inside the residence and attacking two police officers with a kitchen knife before being shot to death.
According to the New York Police Department, two police officers, both seasoned veterans of the force, responded to a disturbance call and were assaulted in the driveway of the home by the alleged perpetrator. The officers spotted Gordon carrying luggage from the residence, which raised suspicion. However, they could not have anticipated the horrifying scene that awaited them.
During a chaotic encounter, one officer was slashed in the face while the other suffered a cut to the head. Despite their injuries, one of the officers managed to open fire on Gordon, ultimately ending the attack. The suspect, who had previously been arrested for strangulation domestic violence in the Bronx, was pronounced dead at the scene.
As authorities began investigating the incident, they discovered the devastating extent of the violence. An 11-year-old girl, who had been stabbed outside the front door of the home, was rushed to the hospital but tragically succumbed to her injuries. Inside the residence, three more victims were found fatally stabbed in two back bedrooms. Among the deceased was a 12-year-old boy, while a 61-year-old woman was found critically wounded and transported to Mount Sinai Hospital in Queens.
The names of the victims have not been released, pending notification of their relatives. However, it is believed that they were related to the suspect. The motive behind this horrific attack remains under investigation.
Despite the unimaginable horror of the situation, the actions of the injured officers were commended by Patrick Henry, president of the New York City Police Benevolent Association. He praised the veteran officer who fatally shot the attacker, emphasizing the officer’s remarkable skill in neutralizing the threat despite being injured.
