The Merrillville Police Department responded to a distress call at a residence located in the 3100 block of West 79th Place around 5:45 p.m.

Emergency medical services were the first to arrive at the scene and immediately initiated medical procedures on the victim, a 3-year-old boy. The child was then swiftly transported via ambulance to Methodist Hospital Southlake Campus for urgent treatment, but sadly, despite the best efforts of medical professionals, he was pronounced dead shortly after arrival. The young boy has been identified as King Penro, as confirmed by the police on Tuesday.

The heartbreaking incident left the family devastated, their emotions overwhelming them to the extent that police officers had to restrain one family member at the scene. ABC7 reported that loved ones gathered at the hospital to provide support to the grieving family, who were understandably distraught by the sudden loss. Ron Brewer, the husband of the child’s daycare provider, shared fond memories of the toddler, describing him as a bright and intelligent young boy with an infectious happiness and a captivating personality. He lamented the tragedy, stating, “It’s like he’d been here before. Today is just a sad day.”

While the exact circumstances surrounding the accidental shooting remain unclear, Merrillville Police Commander Matthew Vasel assured the public that detectives were actively investigating the incident. Vasel emphasized that the police are committed to conducting a thorough investigation to ensure accuracy and establish a comprehensive understanding of the events leading up to the tragic incident. At present, it appears that the shooting was an accident, with investigators recovering a firearm from the residence and noting that only one shot was fired.
