The incident occurred during a standoff between the police and a man who had called 911, claiming to be armed and expressing a desire to die.
Upon receiving the distress call just after 1 p.m., officers swiftly responded to the 900 block of 9th Avenue Southwest in Bessemer. The location was near the rear parking lot of UAB West Hospital, where they encountered the armed man. Negotiations with the suspect began at this point and lasted for approximately five hours.
However, the situation took a turn when the suspect approached the officers, pointing his gun at them. In response, the officers opened fire, shooting the man. The Alabama Law Enforcement Agency (ALEA) has confirmed these details. The wounded suspect has been identified as Okorie Akeem Honeycutt, a 36-year-old resident of Birmingham. Despite sustaining gunshot wounds, Honeycutt remained conscious and communicated with the officers before being transported to UAB Hospital in Birmingham via ambulance.
