Death – Obituary – Accident and Crime News : Tragic Shooting in Dallas Ends with Suspect’s Apparent Suicide After Police Chase

The search for the gunman responsible for a quadruple killing, including a 1-year-old boy, in a Dallas home has come to a shocking end. After leading police on a high-speed freeway chase, the suspect died by apparent suicide after crashing into a ditch, authorities have confirmed.

The devastating incident took place on Sunday afternoon in a southeast Dallas neighborhood. The Dallas Police Department has stated that the shooting appears to be an isolated incident and there is no ongoing threat to the public.

The suspect has been identified as 21-year-old Byron Carillo, according to a statement released by the police. Family members of the victims, speaking to ABC affiliate station WFAA, revealed that Carillo was the ex-boyfriend of one of the victims, 20-year-old Vanessa De La Cruz, and the father of their child, Logan De La Cruz, who tragically lost his life in the attack. The family stated that De La Cruz had ended her relationship with Carillo due to alleged abuse. The shooting occurred at the home of De La Cruz’s parents.

Police disclosed that Carillo had been ordered to wear an ankle monitoring device after being charged with aggravated assault in 2021. It remains unclear if Vanessa De La Cruz was the victim in the previous case. The suspect had reportedly cut off his ankle monitor prior to or immediately after committing the recent offense, according to the police statement.

Carillo was spotted driving a stolen vehicle on Interstate 35 in Austin, over 200 miles away from Dallas, on Monday. When highway patrol officers attempted to apprehend him, a chase ensued. During the pursuit, Carillo veered off the freeway, crashing into a ditch. He attempted to flee on foot but shot himself in the head as officers closed in, resulting in his death.

The incident in southeast Dallas marks the 627th mass shooting this year, as reported by the Gun Violence Archive. Logan De La Cruz’s tragic death makes him the 272nd child aged 11 or younger to lose their life in a shooting this year.

The other victims of the Dallas shooting have been identified as Karina Lopez, 33, and Jose Lopez, 50. The motive behind the slayings remains under investigation.

Dallas has experienced an 11% increase in homicides this year compared to 2022, according to crime data from the Dallas Police Department. As of Sunday, the city had recorded 226 homicides in 2023.

This heartbreaking incident serves as a stark reminder of the ongoing issue of gun violence in the United States, and the urgent need for comprehensive measures to address this pervasive problem.
