Death – Obituary – Accident and Crime News : JACKSONVILLE, Ark. – A man has been apprehended and is now facing multiple charges in connection with a robbery that took place at a Waffle House on Sunday night, according to the Jacksonville Police Department (JPD).
The suspect, identified as 31-year-old Vashun Mayo, is facing a slew of charges, including aggravated robbery, attempted capital murder, five counts of kidnapping, possession of a firearm by a certain person, theft by receiving, endangering the welfare of a minor, terroristic threatening, five counts of aggravated assault, tampering with physical evidence, second-degree battery, and fleeing.
The incident unfolded when authorities received a 911 call reporting a robbery at the popular restaurant shortly before 11:40 p.m. Upon arriving at the scene, officers attempted to make contact with the suspect, who was later identified as Mayo. However, they found that the front door of the establishment was locked. Determined to apprehend the suspect, the officers broke the glass of the door and entered the building.
As the officers made their way inside, Mayo fired his gun twice at them before fleeing through the rear door. The police gave chase, firing shots at Mayo as he ran into the nearby woods. One of the shots struck Mayo in the left lower leg. Following the shooting, Mayo was transported to the University of Arkansas for Medical Sciences for medical treatment.
In the aftermath of the incident, the officer who discharged their weapon has been placed on administrative leave. The Arkansas State Police have been called in to investigate the use of force. Once their investigation is complete, the case file will be handed over to the local prosecuting attorney, who will determine if the officer’s use of force was justified.
