Death – Obituary – Accident and Crime News : Teenager Arrested in Ybor City Shooting Now Faces Murder Charges

A 14-year-old boy who was recently arrested on weapons charges in connection with a deadly shooting in Ybor City is now facing murder charges, according to the police. Kadyn Michael Abney has been charged with second-degree murder with a firearm in the death of 20-year-old Harrison Boonstoppel. Tampa Police Chief Lee Bercaw announced the charges in a news conference held on Wednesday evening.

The police chief was joined by Hillsborough State Attorney Suzy Lopez and the family of Harrison Boonstoppel at the police headquarters. Lopez emphasized the need to take a strong stance against juvenile gun violence in the community. She stated that Abney had 11 pending juvenile cases related to aggravated assault, battery, and grand larceny. Despite his age, Abney will now be charged as an adult and held responsible for the events that took place in Ybor City.

The shooting incident occurred on the morning of October 29 near the 1600 block of East Seventh Avenue in Ybor. It was the result of an argument between two groups, leading to two deaths and 16 injuries. Abney was taken into custody on November 16 in Palm Beach County after tips led investigators to him. He was initially charged with being a minor in possession of a firearm while wearing a mask and carrying a concealed firearm.

Video evidence shared with the police showed Abney displaying his gun and firing four shots during the incident. Another suspect, Tyrell Phillips, 22, was also arrested in connection with the shooting. Phillips is charged with second-degree murder in the death of 14-year-old Elijah Wilson. The police are still looking for additional shooters and individuals of interest shown in a video released by the authorities.

Tampa Police Chief Bercaw expressed gratitude for the information provided by the public and encouraged anyone with further evidence or information to come forward through the online portal created to aid the ongoing investigation.

The charges against Abney mark a significant step forward in the case, but the police are committed to uncovering the full extent of the incident and bringing all responsible parties to justice.
