The horrifying incident occurred on Wednesday at approximately 5:15 pm (IST) when a shooter targeted the university campus. Authorities later discovered the suspected shooter deceased, although the circumstances surrounding their death remain unclear.
The university swiftly issued an emergency alert to students and the surrounding community, urging them to take immediate action. The alert, posted on X, emphasized the gravity of the situation, stating, “This is not a test. RUN-HIDE-FIGHT.”
The shooter specifically targeted the Beam Hall, located within the Frank and Estella Building, which houses UNLV’s esteemed Lee Business School. UNLV’s sprawling 332-acre (135-hectare) campus is situated less than 2 miles east of the vibrant Las Vegas Strip. In response to the attack, authorities were able to declare the area safe after approximately 40 minutes. However, the exact number of students present on campus at the time of the incident remains unknown among the university’s 30,000-strong student body.
