BREAKING: None : “Municipality of Limassol Implements Protective Measures After Balcony Collapse Incident”

Death – Obituary – Accident and Crime News : Limassol Municipality Implements Protective Measures Following Balcony Collapse

In response to the recent incident on Nafpliou Street in Limassol, where balconies collapsed, the Municipality of Limassol has taken swift action to ensure the safety of residents and passers-by. A press release from the Municipality stated that all necessary protective measures have been implemented.

Following an on-site inspection by the Technical Service, it was determined that the probable cause of the balcony collapse was the presence of rusted reinforcements in the structure. Interestingly, the building in question had undergone repairs and maintenance about four years ago, which now seems to have been ineffective, raising concerns about the responsibilities of those involved in the maintenance and repair processes.

The Municipality of Limassol stressed the urgent need for legislative regulation of periodic Certificates of Suitability for buildings. It emphasized that in the last 10 years, over 500 buildings have been inspected, with warning letters sent to the owners of 400 buildings, urging them to appoint a registered Civil Engineer for a study. Approximately 100 buildings were declared dangerous, and owners were called upon to take immediate measures under the guidance of a Civil Engineer. In cases where there was no immediate response, the Municipality intervened and spent over €1,000,000.00 to eliminate any existing risks.

To address the issue of dangerous buildings, the Municipality of Limassol highlighted the necessity for two fundamental measures: the implementation of Certificates of Suitability for buildings and the official designation of Management Committees as legal entities with corresponding responsibilities and obligations.

It is clear that drastic action needs to be taken to prevent fatal incidents caused by dangerous buildings. The Municipality of Limassol acknowledges the need for immediate legislative intervention to ensure the safety of its residents and prevent similar incidents from occurring in the future.

By acting promptly and implementing protective measures, the Limassol Municipality has demonstrated its commitment to the safety and well-being of its citizens. It is imperative that lessons are learned from this incident and that comprehensive regulations are put in place to prevent such incidents and protect the public.
