Debashish Roy : 22-Year-Old Construction Site Worker Dies After Falling from Eighth Floor

Death – Obituary – Accident and Crime News : MUMBAI: A tragic incident occurred on Sunday when a 22-year-old construction worker fell from the eighth floor of an under-construction building in Andheri (East) and succumbed to multiple injuries. The victim, identified as Debashish Roy, was rushed to Cooper Hospital by two other laborers present at the site, Vijay Haldar and Ali Hussain, but unfortunately, he could not be saved.

The contractor responsible for the site, Iqbal Punjabi, has been booked by the Andheri police for not following safety measures. It has been alleged that Punjabi did not secure the site with safety nets and failed to provide safety gear to the workers. As a result, Roy lost his life due to negligence.

According to Malay Haldar, the deceased’s cousin’s brother, Roy was working on the eighth floor without adequate lighting. He was involved in handing over cement for plastering when he lost control and fell from the uncovered duct. Roy landed on the second-floor podium parking and lost consciousness. Haldar and Hussain immediately rushed him to the hospital, but unfortunately, he was declared dead on admission.

The Andheri police have arrested Iqbal Punjabi under section 304 (A) of the Indian Penal Code, which deals with causing death due to negligence. Investigations are ongoing to determine the exact circumstances that led to the accident.

Further scrutiny of the site has revealed that the workers were forced to work in the dark without any safety gear. This blatant disregard for their well-being puts the spotlight on the lack of safety regulations in the construction industry. Authorities must ensure that contractors adhere to proper safety protocols to prevent such tragic incidents from occurring in the future.

The incident serves as a grim reminder of the risks faced by construction workers who often work under hazardous conditions. It is essential for contractors and site managers to prioritize the safety of their workers by providing them with the necessary safety equipment and ensuring that safety measures are implemented at all times.

The construction industry must take this incident as a wake-up call and make concerted efforts to improve safety standards. The loss of a young life should not be in vain, and steps must be taken to prevent similar accidents in the future.
