David J. Shangreaux, Jr., the 23-year-old man accused of fatally stabbing Evie Maxey, a 17-year-old girl from Rapid City, appeared in court today. A $300,000 cash-only bond has been set for Shangreaux, who has been charged with Second Degree Murder, a Class B felony. The maximum penalty for this charge is life imprisonment and/or a $50,000 fine.
During the hearing, Assistant South Dakota Attorney General Ernest Thompson requested a $1 million cash-only bond, citing the seriousness of the crime. Shangreaux’s court-appointed attorney, Justin Bell, argued for a personal recognizance bond. The court ultimately set the bond at $300,000 cash-only.

Shangreaux, who had become intoxicated, began threatening Maxey with a knife. L.G. left the residence, leaving Maxey and Shangreaux in the bathroom, where Shangreaux was still armed with the knife.
