Eric Lewis : “Driver Arrested after Fatal Hit-and-Run in Maryland Work Zone: Police”

Death – Obituary – Accident and Crime News : Police authorities announced on Thursday that they have apprehended the driver responsible for a tragic hit-and-run incident that occurred on Wednesday morning, claiming the life of a contractor who was trimming trees in a work zone. The unfortunate incident took place on the Beltway Inner Loop in Silver Spring, Maryland.

The Maryland State Police have identified the driver as Jadien Ranard Jones, a resident of Henrico, Virginia. Jones was operating a white 2021 Freightliner straight truck at the time of the crash. The authorities were able to locate both the truck and the 39-year-old driver at The Home Depot Distribution Center in Sparrows Point, Maryland, on Wednesday afternoon.

According to the police report, the truck was traveling eastbound on the Beltway Inner Loop around 10:15 a.m. when it entered a work zone near the intersection of Interstate 495 and Georgia Avenue. The truck veered onto the right shoulder, colliding with multiple traffic cones and ultimately striking the tree-trimmer. Shockingly, the driver fled the scene immediately after the collision.

The victim, identified as Eric Lewis, a 57-year-old resident of Washington, D.C., tragically succumbed to his injuries at the crash site, as confirmed by the Maryland State Police. Lewis was employed as a foreman for a mobile tree trimming operation contracted through the Maryland Department of Transportation State Highway Administration.

As the investigation into this heart-wrenching incident continues, charges have not yet been filed against Jones. The police are diligently working to gather all the necessary evidence to bring about a just resolution.

Following the collision, certain lanes of traffic in the vicinity of the crash were temporarily closed, causing minor disruptions. However, as of 2:15 p.m. on Wednesday, all lanes had been reopened, restoring normal traffic flow in the area.

This tragic incident serves as a stark reminder of the ongoing efforts in Maryland to enhance safety in work zones. In March of last year, a catastrophic crash on Interstate 695 near Baltimore resulted in the loss of six highway workers’ lives. As a result of that incident, the State Highway Administration faced serious violations and has been actively implementing measures to prevent similar tragedies from occurring in the future.

The loss of Eric Lewis is a devastating blow to his family, friends, and colleagues. As the investigation progresses, authorities will strive to ensure that justice is served, providing some solace to those affected by this senseless tragedy.
