Margie Quibol : “Lyft driver pleads guilty to causing fatal crash, sentenced to community service”

Death – Obituary – Accident and Crime News : SANTA ANA — In a tragic incident, a 32-year-old man has pleaded guilty this week and has been immediately sentenced to 250 hours of community service for causing a fatal crash as a Lyft driver in Tustin. Andy Van Pham, the accused, entered his guilty plea on Monday to charges of vehicular manslaughter and possession of a controlled substance. As part of the plea deal, additional charges of possession of drug paraphernalia and unlawfully providing false information to a police officer were dismissed, along with an infraction for making an unsafe turn or lane change.

The fatal crash occurred in the early hours of April 4, 2021, near the intersection of Jamboree Road and Patriot Way, according to the Tustin police. Pham, who had fallen asleep behind the wheel, lost control of his vehicle and collided with a light pole, resulting in the tragic death of his 70-year-old passenger, Margie Quibol, a resident of Tustin.

In addition to the community service, Pham was also sentenced to 44 days in jail for the manslaughter charge. However, he received credit for the time served in jail before being released on bail. For the possession of a controlled substance charge, Pham was sentenced to a month in jail. However, this sentence will not be served if he successfully completes the assigned community service by June 11. Following the incident, Pham was no longer employed by Lyft.

The court’s decision to impose community service instead of a lengthier prison sentence has garnered mixed reactions from the public. While some argue that Pham’s remorse and willingness to take responsibility should be considered, others believe that the punishment should have been more severe, given the tragic outcome of his negligence.

As Pham embarks on his community service, he will have the opportunity to reflect on the consequences of his actions and work towards making amends. The loss of Margie Quibol serves as a painful reminder of the importance of driver vigilance and responsibility on the road.
