A tragic incident unfolded in Pader District on Friday when a police driver allegedly struck and killed a soldier, identified as Corporal Zadock Ojok of the Uganda People’s Defence Forces (UPDF). The driver, Corporal Churchill Ocaya, surrendered himself to authorities at Pader Central Police Station over the weekend, according to police spokespersons.
Apac District Police Commander, Rodgers Kapere, confirmed that the suspect was at the police station but did not clarify if he was detained. Kapere stated that the investigation into the incident was underway, and the Inspector of Vehicles (IOV) from Lira District would assess the vehicle involved to determine if there was a brake failure or any other mechanical issue.
The tragic incident occurred at a checkpoint along the Lira-Kitgum Road in Rackoko Trading Centre. Ocaya, who hails from Apac Central Police Station, was driving a police vehicle at the time of the incident. Initial reports suggest that the suspect had abandoned his duty station on December 15 to transport his family to their village in Pader District.
“It’s alleged that he transported the family members using a police van and was armed with rifle number UG-POL.56 – 128110031, loaded with 60 rounds of ammunition,” police officials noted.
The loss of Corporal Zadock Ojok has left the community in shock and mourning. The UPDF soldier was known for his dedication and service to the nation. As news of his tragic death spread, condolences poured in from friends, colleagues, and members of the public.
